What does TEC actually mean?
You’ve probably realised by now that we’re TECwomen, not TECHwomen. But have you ever wondered why? Or thought it was a typo?
TEC stands for Technology, Engineering and Creativity. Three areas that are often talked about separately, but are increasingly connected in the world around us.
Think about designing a product, developing new technology, building a sustainable home or creating a film. All of these bring together different skills, including problem solving and practical making to digital know-how, imagination and design.
We bring these worlds together to create opportunities for women and girls to explore and learn more about these industries. Through our work with programmes we support people at different stages of their lives, helping them build skills, confidence and connections with the industries shaping our future.
TEC is everywhere
Technology, engineering and creativity are all around us. They shape the way we live, work and solve problems, often in ways we might not even realise.
Think about an aerospace engineer designing the next generation of aircraft.
They need engineering knowledge, an understanding of technology and creative thinking to solve complex challenges. A game designer combines storytelling, visual design and coding to bring a new world to life. A renewable energy engineer uses data, technical skills and innovative thinking to develop cleaner ways to power our homes.
Even roles that might not immediately spring to mind rely on a mix of TEC skills. A digital marketer uses creativity and technology to understand audiences and share ideas. A product designer brings together research, digital tools and practical problem solving to turn an idea into something people can use.
TEC isn’t just about one subject, one skill or one career. It’s about the different ways we can use technology, engineering and creativity together to shape the world around us. And as these industries continue to evolve, the opportunities to use these skills are growing too.
Building skills and confidence at every stage
We want women and girls to feel confident exploring these opportunities, whatever stage of their journey they’re at.
Through TECgirls, we introduce girls to technology, engineering and creativity from a very early age, with hands-on clubs, workshops, industry experiences and opportunities to meet women working in these fields. As they grow, our programmes help them develop new skills, explore career possibilities and connect their interests with real opportunities.
For women, UPLIFT offers opportunities to build digital skills, develop confidence and explore new career paths. Our training and supportive community help women take their next step, whether that means developing skills for their current role or exploring a new direction.
Across both programmes, our aim is to make these industries feel more accessible, helping women and girls recognise the skills they already have, discover new ones and see where they could take them.
The future of technology, engineering and creativity should be shaped by people with a wide range of skills, experiences and ideas.
